Rodney Wiltshire, a proud South Troy native, has led a life of purpose and achievement. Growing up in the Troy Hill Apartments on Thompson St, Rodney's early experiences shaped his character and ignited his passion for leadership and the outdoors.
During his formative years, Rodney actively participated in the little league for South Troy, honing his teamwork skills and becoming a patrol leader in Boy Scout Troop 502. During this time, Rodney cultivated a deep appreciation for nature and the environment.
Later, Rodney and his sister became paper carriers for the Troy Record, delivering news to their community. He also dedicated his time as a lifeguard and pool supervisor at the South End Pool, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of those he served.
Education played a vital role in Wiltshire's journey. He attended School 16, Doyle Middle School, and Troy High School, immersing himself in his local public education system. At Troy High, Rodney actively contributed to the school newspaper, while his passion for music led him to participate in the high school musical each Spring. Additionally, he demonstrated his athletic prowess, excelling as a running back and jumper on the Troy High School football and track teams.
Following his high school graduation, Rodney pursued higher education at Cornell University, majoring in Electrical Engineering. At Cornell, he proved transformative, excelling in various areas, including music, theatre, athletics, and academics. Rodney's undergraduate years equipped him with valuable skills and experiences that would shape his future career. Moreover, he forged lifelong friendships within his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu.
After graduation, Rodney Wiltshire embarked on a career in engineering, starting as a software engineer before focusing on power systems electrical engineering. His expertise attracted the attention of renowned companies, where he contributed to groundbreaking projects and collaborated with innovative startups. Rodney's journey also led him to work for the U.S. Navy in their Nuclear program and N.Y. Independent System Operator, where he played a pivotal role in the electricity markets and the state's electrical grid. He gained experience in the air travel industry, optimizing airline routes for enhanced efficiency.
2007 Rodney and his wife Jolene established Empire Solar, a distinguished solar development company. Through their unwavering commitment, they have successfully closed over 100MW of solar projects, overseeing the development and installation of more than 250MW. Rodney's vast experience has positioned him as one of New York State's most accomplished solar developers, earning him recognition as a member of the Business Review's Forty under 40 Class 2010.
Empire Solar specializes in developing, installing, and financing solar projects for diverse clients, including residential, commercial, industrial, governmental, and utility customers. With a team of passionate experts, Rodney and Jolene are dedicated to assisting clients in saving money, reducing their carbon footprint, and fostering sustainable practices.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Rodney treasures his family life. He met his wife at a singing competition in Albany, NY, and their shared journey led them to purchase their first home in Troy. Together, they are blessed with two sons, and Rodney cherishes moments spent with his loved ones. He actively engages in community and political events and attends life. He church services and participates in school meetings alongside his family's company.
Rodney Wiltshire finds solace in various hobbies during his free time. He indulges his musical inclinations by playing the guitar and singing. Maintaining an active lifestyle, he enjoys working out and embraces the opportunity to explore history and cryptocurrency. Additionally, Rodney enjoys coaching and supporting his sons in their sporting endeavours. His love for the outdoors often leads him to seek solace in nature's embrace.
Philanthropy has always held a special place in Rodney's heart. Notably, he was elected President of the Troy City Council, leading the majority and championing legislation that benefited the City of Troy, New York. Rodney's philanthropic efforts extend to numerous charitable organizations, including Capital Roots, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, and the American Red Cross. He has dedicated his life to making a tangible difference in the lives of others.
